Action Needed: Switch private workers to HTTP long-polling before January 1st, 2027
We’re going to be making a change to how your private workers talk to Spacelift. Currently, they talk to Spacelift over an MQTT queue. That means one more endpoint to allow through your firewall and one more moving part between Spacelift and your workers. We’ve had feedback that you’d like to see this simplified, so as of January 1st, 2027, we’re doing that.
HTTP long-poll will be replacing MQTT for server-to-worker communication. That means workers will only need outbound HTTPS on port 443 configured, simplifying your network rules and taking worker-iot.spacelift.io off your allow list.
Why we’re changing it
You will no longer need to allow AWS IoT endpoints. Workers will only need outbound HTTPS (port 443) to your Spacelift server.
There are fewer moving parts, so there’s less to break and less to debug.
What does this mean for you?
If you're using private workers, you'll need to switch to HTTP long-polling. If you only use Spacelift's public workers, you don't need to do anything.
What is the timeline?
Today: HTTP long-polling is available and supported. You can switch at any time.
December 31st, 2026: Recommended date to finish the switch.
March 30th, 2027: MQTT is turned off entirely. Workers still on MQTT will not be able to pick up any runs.
How to switch
Use the latest available worker version. Then, choose the path that matches how you deploy workers:
Terraform Module for AWS (
terraform-aws-spacelift-workerpool-on-ec2): Upgrade to v9.1.0 or later. HTTP long-polling is the default from that version. It’s a major release, so please check the release notes before you upgrade.Helm Chart: Upgrade to v0.83.0 or later ****and apply it.
Kubernetes Workers: Set the transport on the
WorkerPoolresource. See the Kubernetes workers guide here.Terraform Modules for Azure: Upgrade to version v5.0.0, or set the two environment variables below yourself.
Terraform Modules for GCP: Upgrade to version v3.0.0, or set the two environment variables below yourself.
Docker-Based Workers, or your own custom configuration: Set two environment variables on each worker:
SPACELIFT_WORKER_COMMS_PROTOCOL=poll SPACELIFT_WORKER_COMMS_URL=https://app.spacelift.io US-region accounts use https://app.us.spacelift.io
