Thank you for this detailed feature request regarding CloudFront POPs for module delivery in mainland China. I understand the performance challenges your team is experiencing when accessing Spacelift registry modules from China.
After evaluating this request, I want to share some context on why this isn't something we're planning to prioritize in the near term, along with some alternative approaches that might help.
Why this is challenging to implement:
Based on our research, supporting CloudFront POPs in mainland China would require significant infrastructure changes including ICP recordal compliance, separate configuration management for China-specific regions, and potentially partnerships with local CDN providers. The Great Firewall also introduces deliberate throttling that affects CloudFront performance regardless of POP location.
Alternative solutions to consider:
• Private Worker Pools: If your team has infrastructure in China, you could use private worker pools with local module caching to reduce external network dependencies.
• Module Mirroring: Consider mirroring frequently-used modules to a local Git repository or S3 bucket within China, then referencing them as external modules.
• VPN/Network Optimization: Some customers have had success with enterprise VPN solutions or network optimization tools designed for China connectivity.
• Local Module Development: For critical modules, consider developing and maintaining local versions that don't require external registry access.
While we understand this creates friction for your China-based users, the engineering investment required for China-specific CDN infrastructure doesn't align with our current strategic priorities. We're focused on features that provide broader value across our user base.
I've noted your feedback for future consideration, and if we see significant demand from other customers facing similar challenges, we may revisit this. In the meantime, I'd be happy to help you explore the alternative approaches mentioned above.
